Transforming Experience into Knowledge: Xiao En × UTAR Creating New Possibilities Together

No one in the funeral profession has done this before. Few in the field of education have attempted it either.

Yet every meaningful beginning starts with one simple act — believing.

Believing that the experiences of frontline Life Practitioners are more than years of professional service — they are a body of knowledge worthy of learning, research, and transmission. Believing that life education can extend beyond the classroom to become an academic discipline with both scholarly value and practical significance.

With this shared vision, Xiao En and the Faculty of Education at UTAR have jointly launched the “Life Education Practice Experience Development Project”, marking the beginning of an interdisciplinary collaboration.

The project aims to help frontline Life Practitioners systematically document, interpret, and translate their years of practical experience, professional expertise, and life wisdom into a structured body of knowledge that can be studied, researched, and passed on to future generations.

We believe that what deserves to be preserved is not only professional skills, but also the understanding, judgement, compassion, and presence that Life Practitioners cultivate through their daily work. These invaluable qualities deserve to be documented, recognised, and shared with a wider community.

Looking ahead, we hope this knowledge system will not only provide a solid learning foundation for future Life Practitioners, but also find its place in higher education. By integrating life education into university classrooms, students from diverse disciplines will have the opportunity to engage with life and death education in a more structured and meaningful way — deepening their understanding of life, reflecting on mortality, and exploring the importance of human relationships, empathy, and care.

This launch ceremony marks more than the beginning of a new project; it represents a milestone worthy of celebration.

It carries a simple yet meaningful message: “ There is always a place for professionals like you. ”

Because every Life Practitioner’s experience deserves a place.

When these experiences are transformed into knowledge, made visible, and passed on, the role of the Life Practitioner will continue to inspire future learners, shaping generations to come as they journey towards a deeper understanding of life.
