Two years ago, the first cohort of students from Kuala Lumpur Chung Hwa Independent High School (KL Chung Hwa) embarked on their journey of life education. Today, as they bid farewell to their alma mater, their graduation ceremony is once again graced by the presence of life education, offering them a meaningful and unforgettable blessing.
At the end of 2024, ten graduating students from KL Chung Hwa took on the role of life education ambassadors, serving as curators for Life Talk Show. Together with five Life Practitioners from Xiao En Group, they presented two deeply moving and invaluable Life Talk Show sessions, dedicated to the Junior Middle Three and Senior Middle Three graduates.
These ten students were carefully selected through interviews and began their training with the Xiao En Life Education team immediately after completing their Unified Examination (UEC). Whether participating in online discussions or on-site rehearsals, they were fully committed to the process. They first attentively listened to the life stories of the five Life Practitioners, then crafted their introductions based on these profound encounters. Every word and sentence they delivered stemmed from their in-depth dialogues and reflections with these Life Practitioners, embodying their immersive experience in life education. Through their opening remarks and thought-provoking insights, they paved the way for the Life Practitioners to share their expertise. As the audience listened to firsthand accounts of witnessing life’s final moments, they were also reminded of the importance of cherishing their precious relationships—expressing love while there is still time and reducing the regrets that often accompany final goodbyes. Additionally, nearly 20 Senior Middle One students, voluntarily forming a choir under the guidance of their music teacher, used the power of song and melody to bring the Life Talk Show to a poignant and heartfelt close.
As the renowned poet Rabindranath Tagore once wrote in Let Life Be Like a Light:
“ Live as a light, for you never know who will find their way out of darkness by your glow. ”
This unique Life Talk Show was more than just a graduation ceremony for the Junior Middle Three and Senior Meddle Three students; it was a powerful lesson in the meaning of life. Like a radiant beam of light, it carried the hope that graduates would continue to respect and embrace life as they journey forward.
The seeds of this initiative were first sown in September 2022, when the KL Chung Hwa administrative team visited Xiao En Group for a guided learning experience in life education. This exchange sparked discussions on how education can instill in students an appreciation for life’s value as they grow.
By the end of 2022, KL Chung Hwa began arranging for its first group of Senior Middle One students to visit the Xiao En Memorial Centre in Cheras and the Xiao En Memorial Park in Nilai for an off-campus educational program to explore the journey of life. This marked the beginning of their life education studies. Led by Xiao En Life Education team, they toured the ceremonial halls, clinical care rooms, grief counselling departments, and the Academy for Silent Mentor. They gained insight into the functions of each space, the meticulous work of clinical care specialists in preparing the departed, the cremation process, and the founding mission of the Academy For Silent Mentor. The visit also included a reflective session guided by Xiao En’s certified counselors, where students contemplated life’s impermanence and wrote down their aspirations for life. This thought-provoking experience of embracing life through an awareness of death instilled in them the importance of treasuring the present and appreciating life’s fleeting beauty.
In 2023, as these students progressed to Senior Middle Two, they attended a special Life Care Exhibition(生命关爱展)organized by the KL Chung Hwa Counseling Department. This exhibition reunited them with the five Life Practitioners, who shared their experiences of providing dignity and solace to the departed. Through their reflections on their roles as ferrymen of life, the artisans also imparted valuable lessons on personal growth and self-cultivation.
Now, after two years of immersion in life education, these students reach the end of this chapter with their graduation ceremony. May they carry this nourishment of the soul into their next stage of life, embracing each moment with wisdom and gratitude.
