Bringing Life Education to Second-Tier Cities

Bringing Life Education to Second-Tier Cities

Amid the unequal distribution of urban and rural resources, life education has taken a bold step beyond the capital, reaching smaller towns and communities across various states. This initiative offers individuals an opportunity to explore the value of life through the lens of “understanding life by facing death and living fully in its awareness.” Between July and October 2024, the “It’s All About Life and Death” community event series embarked on a meaningful journey through Klang (Selangor), Kuching (Sarawak), and Kota Bharu (Kelantan), engaging around 800 local residents in profound dialogues about life and death.

Organized by Daie Culture, the event co-organized by a range of partners, including Pin Hwa High School (Klang), Life Care Society (Kuching), Chung Hwa independent High School (Kelantan), Kelantan Chinese Chamber of Commerce, SJK (C) Chung Hwa (Kelantan), SMJK Chung Hwa (Kota Bharu, Kelantan), CHUNG HWA ALUMNI (Kelantan). Additional support from Xiao En Group, the Malaysian Association of Paediatric Palliative Care (MAPPAC), the Dharma Drum Mountain Buddhist Centre Malaysia, and SIGNCOTIVE Design Team.

The speaker series featured a team of eight expert, including: Mr. Fong Yee Leong, a Professional of hospice care; Dr. Lee Chee Chan, President of MAPPAC; Ven. Chang Zao, Director of Dharma Drum Mountain Buddhist Centre Malaysia; A full team of “Life Practitioners” from Xiao En Group, including Kezman Kok, Family Care Consultant; Desmond Koh, Clinical Care Profession; Sunny Tan, Bereavement Care Profession; Nelson Lai, Crematory Operator; Quek Ser Pin, Certified Counsellor.

The event’s title, ” It’s All About Life and Death “, directly addresses the topic at hand. As Kidman Kok, Head of Marketing Communication at Xiao En Group, explained: “The first step to life and death education is having the courage to confront these issues. If you’re unable to open up and discuss ‘life and death,’ it may indicate a lack of readiness. The purpose of this theme is to encourage people to embrace the full cycle of life, from life to death and back again, without avoidance.”

Despite traveling to three different locations, each community event followed a similar format. The morning sessions featured two thematic talks. In the afternoon, participants could choose from four interactive workshops with the speakers.

Expanding into Schools and Communities

Beyond these community events, the Xiao En Life Education Outreach Unit further amplified their impact by engaging directly with schools in Kota Bharu (Kelantan) and Kuching (Sarawak). Guided by the mission of life education, the team fostered meaningful connections with local students, sparking reflections on the value of life. In Kelantan, they joined students from the Chung Hwa independent High School, Kelantan for a community service activity, where they collaborated with children at local Chinese primary schools as SJK (C) Chung Hwa on creative projects. Meanwhile, in Kuching, the team conducted talks at Batu Kawa Min Lit Secondary School and Chung Hua Middle School No.4, under the theme ” Love Never Ends. ” During these sessions, Life Practitioners shared personal experiences from their work witnessing the farewell of life. They emphasized the importance of recognizing ordinary yet profound acts of love, which require ongoing reminders and education to foster early appreciation, reduce regrets, and inspire people to live well.
